In an effort to educate myself on the full spectrum of college consulting, I've started a reading list. I recently finished my first book off the list: The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College by Jacques Steinberg, creator of The Choice blog. Having decided recently to shift my career focus from admissions test prep to college counseling, I found this work by Steinberg to be an emotional and informative experience. He captures the humanity behind college admissions so effectively and, with a 2012 afterward, updates some of the aspects of his reporting that might be dated. I'm happy that The Gatekeepers was my first "official" reading on the college admissions process--it made me even more enthusiastic about my career change!
My upcoming books to read include the following:
- How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get Into College by Standing Out (Without Burning Out) by Cal Newport
- Acceptance: A Legendary Guidance Counselor Helps Seven Kids Find the Right Colleges--and Find Themselves by David L. Marcus
- A Is for Admission: The Insider Guide to Getting into the Ivy League and Other Top Colleges by Michele A. Hernandez
Hopefully the only thing I can fault each of these books with is the inability to write a succinct title without support of a subtitle! Looking forward to lots of good reading in the future.
